Choral singing is a form of musical expression, popular in many parts of the world, in which a group of people join their voices to sing together, often in polyphony.

Since its birth, Gen Verde has always created choral pieces dedicated to liturgy, worship and praise, as well as motivational songs, created to inspire and generate positive change, to spread the idea of universal fraternity and the joy of living, themes that they usually interpret in their concerts.

All the Gen Verde pieces aim to convey the message of the Gospel: Love, dialogue, peace, unity among peoples, empathy, inclusion.

Definition of choral singing

Choral singing is a musical practice in which a choir performs vocal pieces. Often divided into vocal sections, such as sopranos, altos, tenors and basses, choristers combine their voices in harmony, creating a sound ensemble enriched by polyphony, i.e. the overlapping of different melodic lines. This type of singing can be performed a cappella, i.e. without instrumental accompaniment, or with the support of musical instruments. Choral singing has deep roots in the religious and folk music traditions of many cultures.

The different types of Gen Verde choral songs

Gen Verde has composed numerous choral pieces, many of them listened and sung by very diverse audiences.

Many of these songs correspond to the ‘motivational music’ genre, a powerful source of inspiration and encouragement, capable of stimulating feelings of confidence, energy and determination. They are true hymns of hope and strength.

Popular songs of this nature are, ‘Accendi la Pace’, ‘Nell’attimo che va’. The most recent motivational choral song, called ‘Nelle mani tue’, inspired by a passage from the Gospel of Matthew. It s an invitation not to lose heart, relying on the hands of the Lord as our only guide.

However, Gen Verde is even better known for its liturgical choral music.

Choral singing in the liturgy

Liturgical and prayer songs are an intrinsic and significant element in the religious celebrations of many traditions. Through melodies that create an atmosphere of contemplation and meaningful texts, these songs accompany the congregation in moments of prayer and enrich their participation in the liturgy.

Gen Verde is the author of both the composition of the music and the lyrics of many liturgical choral pieces, many of them much listened to and sung in countless parishes and churches throughout Italy, as well as in many parts of the world.

One example is the song ‘You Call Us By Name’, suitable for Easter celebrations, ordinary time and as an entrance song for liturgical celebrations, which in its Italian version (‘Chiamati per nome’) has reached over 2.6 million views on YouTube, up to November 2024.

There are countless liturgical choral and prayer songs by Gen Verde, such as ‘Now I know He Is Alive’, ‘Mi alma canta’, ‘Walk On Holy Ground’… in fact, it is possible to even list entire albums of this genre, such as ‘Messa della concordia’ (‘Mass of Concord’), ‘Cerco il tuo volto’ (‘I seek your face’) and many others.

Pierangelo Sequeri, Italian theologian, musicologist and composer, collaborated with Gen Verde on the album ‘Il Mistero Pasquale’ (‘The Paschal Mystery’, 2011). ‘In fact, he enriched it in a theological and musical sense, both in terms of the load-bearing architecture of the album and the deep theological and spiritual core of each passage, gesture and moment. A collection that has become rich and attentive to the details often emphasised by Msgr. Pierangelo Sequeri’ , as we read in his biography.
